Allen Fieldhouse & Memorial Stadium

Lawrence, Kansas

Dedicated in 1955, Allen Fieldhouse can seat 16,300 Jayhawk basketball fans. With a roof peak of 85 feet, the structure also houses administrative and coaching offices for the university’s athletic department. The facility is also used for stage shows, major addresses and for commencement ceremonies when the weather is inclement.

For both Allen Fieldhouse and Memorial Stadium, Poole Fire Protection conducted a code analysis report documenting existing conditions and code deficiencies.  A Code Footprint was drafted for each facility.  Correction action plans were recommended to correct the deficiencies.  Alternate design methods, materials or equipment were proposed in circumstances that provided a cost savings without lessening safety standards. Egress modeling was performed to document exit times.  Poole Fire Protection’s staff submitted a corrective action plan with supporting documentation to the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office for their subsequent approval.

The university also requested that Poole Fire Protection draft the drawings and specifications needed for the automatic sprinkler and standpipe system, fire pump system, and fire alarm system.  Additional consulting included reviews of cost estimates prepared by the university’s construction management firm; and material recommendations, hydraulic calculations and shop drawings submitted by the project’s contractors.  During construction, Poole Consulting provided construction management and field inspections of the life and safety systems.
